The most important event of the summer on the shores of Lake Como is surely the festival of San Giovanni in Ossuccio, which is held the weekend following the Patron Saints day, in the second half of June. The festival is not only the occasion to party in the small town laghée, but a great event that also involves neighboring towns, becoming the star of the whole western branch of the lake during the traditional fireworks show. The big party starts on Saturday afternoon, when the state Regina is normally closed to traffic between Colonno and Lenno, allowing thousands of people who come here for the event to stroll freely along the highway At Ossuccio, the center of the festival, jousting tents and stalls reminiscent of the typical village festival atmosphere. The climax of the show, however, comes on Saturday night. The Feast of San Giovanni di Ossuccio is also called the Feast of lumaghitt: in centuries past, it was customary to eat polenta and snails the vigiglia of St. John; Then the shells were scattered on the lake and filled with burning candles. Today the tradition is repeated as a bit ‘more modern: the evening before, dozens of boats illuminated by candles gather in the Zoca de l’Oli, the gulf that lies between the Comacina Island and Ossuccio countries and rooms offering a wonderful play of light. The evening continues with the fantastic fireworks display on Comacina Island and the so-called “fire island”, twelve mouths of fire and hundreds of lamps arranged along the perimeter of the island evoke, with music, the fire started from Como 24 June 1169 to punish the people of the lake arrayed against the Emperor Barbarossa. The island was completely destroyed and its inhabitants fled to Varenna, later renamed Nova Insula. The Comacina Island pirotecnicco show you something really unique, both for its location and for the duration of the show (almost uninterrupted half-hour fireworks) .The next day, the festival ends with a procession of boats towards’ Island and the regatta of Lucie, the typical boats of Lake Como, in the race in the waters between Ossuccio and Sala.
